Thailand’s Culture Minister Leads Guinness World Record Event to Mark Chiang Mai’s 730th Anniversary, Paving the Way Toward UNESCO World Heritage Status

Chiang Mai, Thailand — In a momentous celebration marking 730 years since the founding of Chiang Mai, Thailand’s Minister of Culture, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, led a historic ceremony that recorded a unique cultural performance in the Guinness World Records. The event aims to boost global awareness of Chiang Mai’s rich heritage and further its campaign to become a UNESCO World Heritage City.

“The Largest Thai Dance” Sets a New World Record

At the heart of the celebration was a massive performance of the traditional Fon Leb dance — a Northern Thai fingernail dance rooted in the legacy of Princess Dara Rasmi, royal consort of King Rama V. Thousands of performers in traditional Lanna attire danced in unison, creating a visually stunning spectacle that earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records under the title “The Largest Thai Dance”.

The ceremony was attended by national and local dignitaries, including:
